Adjustable Shelf from an IKEA CD rack

CD Shelf

What would you use it for?

Still have one of these around the house? Maybe you junked yours a long time ago! If you come across one at a thrift shop, an IKEA CD rack makes a clever little shelf. It’s a quick and easy project!

Other storage ideas:

  • Make-up or rolled hand towels in the bathroom

  • Spice rack in the kitchen

  • Collection of favorite little objects

  • Or, lay it flat on a surface to use it as a planter or table centerpiece.

What you’ll need:

  • CD tower

  • Several empty CD cases/Jewel cases (for shelves)

  • Scrapbook paper

  • Paint color(s) of choice

  • Paintbrush (preferably not foam)

  • Scissors

Steps to upcycle:

  1. Wipe rack with a damp cloth to make sure it’s dust-free.

  2. Apply a thin coat of paint over everything (you’ll be done with those CD slots in no time, I promise!) A bristle brush works best; a foam brush will show some wear and tear with all the nooks and crannies.

  3. While the paint dries, use an existing CD cover insert as template for your scrapbook paper.

  4. Trace the shape and cut the paper to fit the CD case. You can give each shelf a different look (like I did) or make them all the same.

  5. Once the paint is dry, insert your shelves! They are endlessly adjustable.

  6. This shelf can stand on a surface or can be hung on the wall. (There is already a hole in the back; of course, you’ll want to use a wall anchor and screw to attach it securely to the wall.)
